What Error 21 Means

Error 21 means the bike's controller detected abnormal current in the motor system.

In plain English, the controller saw electrical current outside the range it expected and cut motor power to protect the system.

This can happen after the motor has been working especially hard, such as climbing a steep hill, using heavy throttle under load, or carrying a lot of weight. It can also be caused by a loose or damaged electrical connection, wiring problem, controller fault, or motor problem.

Before You Touch Anything

Turn the bike off and remove the battery before checking electrical connections. Stop troubleshooting and do not ride or charge the bike if:

• The motor or controller is unusually hot

• You smell something burning

• A connector looks melted or burned

• Wiring is discolored, cut, crushed, or damaged

• The battery or battery contacts show signs of overheating

1. Try Restarting the Bike

Sometimes Error 21 is triggered by a temporary overload. Turn the bike completely off, wait several seconds, then turn it back on.

If the error clears and the bike operates normally, the fault may have been temporary.

If Error 21 returns immediately every time under normal riding load, stop troubleshooting and have the bike tested rather than repeatedly reseating connectors.

2. Check the Battery Contacts

Turn the bike off and remove the battery. Look at the metal contacts on both the battery and the battery mount.

• Clean and dry

• Straight and undamaged

• Free of corrosion

• Free of burn marks or melting

If you find burned, melted, or badly damaged contacts, do not reinstall or charge the battery. Have the bike inspected.

If everything looks normal, reinstall the battery and test the bike. If Error 21 returns, turn the bike off and remove the battery before continuing to Step 3.

3. Check the Main Battery Connector

Follow the main power cable from the battery mount toward the controller and locate the large electrical connector.

Pull the two sides straight apart. Do not twist the connector and do not pull on the wires.

• Water or moisture

• Dirt or debris

• Bent or pushed-back pins

• Corrosion

• Burn marks or melted plastic

• Loose or damaged contacts

If anything looks burned, melted, or damaged, stop troubleshooting and have the electrical system inspected. If the connector looks normal, line up the pins and alignment marks and push it firmly back together without twisting.

4. Check the Motor Connector

Find the cable coming from the motor and follow it to the main motor connector, usually near the rear wheel on a rear-hub bike.

Pull the connector straight apart without twisting it. Check both sides for moisture, dirt, bent pins, corrosion, burns, melting, or damaged wiring.

If everything looks normal, line up the arrows or alignment marks and push the connector firmly back together.

5. Test the Bike

Reinstall the battery and turn the bike on. Test the bike carefully under a normal, light-to-moderate load.

If Error 21 returns immediately or repeatedly under normal load, stop riding and have the motor, controller, battery, and wiring tested. Do not keep cycling power or reseating connectors as a substitute for diagnosis.

Error 21 Still Showing?

If the battery contacts and electrical connections look good but Error 21 keeps returning, the problem may be inside the electrical system rather than something that can be fixed by reconnecting a cable.
