Seattle is one of the hilliest big cities in America, and e-bikes are how many locals finally beat Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, and the climb out of Fremont. The Burke-Gilman Trail and Elliott Bay Trail carry heavy commuter traffic year-round, and bridge crossings at Fremont and Ballard funnel thousands of riders daily. The trade-off is weather: nine months of drizzle wash road grit straight into chains, cassettes, and brake pads. Long, steep descents mean Seattle riders burn through pads and rotors faster than almost anywhere, and motors and batteries work hard on sustained grades. If your drivetrain is gritty and your brakes are fading, that is just Seattle doing what Seattle does.

Washington uses the three-class e-bike system: Class 1 (pedal-assist to 20 mph), Class 2 (throttle to 20 mph), and Class 3 (pedal-assist to 28 mph). Class 3 riders must be at least 16 years old and must wear a helmet. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed on shared-use paths where bicycles are permitted; Class 3 e-bikes are generally limited to roads and bike lanes unless a local jurisdiction allows them on paths. No driver's license, registration, or insurance is required.
Laws change, verify current rules with your state DMV before riding.
